Alternative Saturday Nights seeks funding

The Annexe’s innovative and hugely popular programme of alcohol-free Saturday night entertainment is facing possible closure unless a new source of funding can be identified.

Despite being championed as a model approach for helping individuals to escape from drink dependency and attracting capacity audiences during the last 12 months, the future looks bleak due to public funding constraints.

More than 32 evenings have been hosted since the programme was launched in 2008 and the format has been copied by other communities elsewhere in Glasgow with similar success.

Annexe Communities’ general manager, Julie Fox says: “We are fully aware that public finance is going through a very difficult period but remain hopeful that our novel approach to addressing alcohol abuse in the community will be seen as a worthwhile cause for a private benefactor.”

The plight of the entertainment programme was featured in The Herald Society today. [LINK to dowload PDF Herald Society200511.pdf]
